* Acer palmatum is commonly known as Palmate Maple, Japanese Maple or Smooth Japanese Maple.
* 'Atropurpureum' cultivar is known as Red Japanese Maple.
* Native to Japan, China, Korea, Mongolia, and southeast Russia.
* "Rounded" canopy with low branches, desired for its attractive form and spectacular colors.
* Typically multi-trunked with large, purplish-red leaves.
* Suited for an ornamental bonsai specimen or as a lovely, sun-dappled shade tree.
* May grown near patios or walkways, since the roots are not invasive and stay compact.
* Tree trunks may be tapped to collect the sugary sap for making maple syrup.

GROWING RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. Soak seeds in wet paper towel (1 part peroxide/5 parts water) for 24 hours. Sow 3/8” down in shallow container w/moist seed-starting mix. Cover w/plastic wrap & cold stratify 90 days. Keep moist & plant any sprouts immediately.
2. Plant remaining seeds after 90 days in small pots w/seed starting mix. Place in warm, indirect sunlight and keep moist.
3. Transplant to bigger pots as needed, or into their permanent spot after last frost, with a bed of mulch to help establish good root systems. Protect young trees from harsh winters for the first 1-2 years.
